The Motor Car

The twentieth century saw the combustion engine take over the world. Transport evolved from  just the privileged few travelling beyond their home counties-if that far- to man’s first steps on the moon. London itself could have been on the moon for most Devonians -something to see in pictures. Now we can do a day trip!

As post war Britain emerged and cars became more affordable to all, the transport infrastructure had to embrace major improvements, as did properties. Driveways and garages were built on previously well- tended gardens. As cars grew in size so did the garages. Have you past a 1960s mini on the motorway lately? Aptly named at the time but intimidating to be in one today.

Modern cars are rarely garaged. Instead toys of today -bikes, quad bikes etc. fill the garages But there are those with luxury cars and collectors’ classic cars that need garaging, often climate controlled and purpose built. The investment is significant, insurance companies insist on security and owners take pride in protecting them ensuring the rare outings are a pleasure.

There are opportunities to buy property in Devon with purpose built garaging for special cars and more with potential.

Strutt and Parker (01392 215631) are selling Coombe Hill, Lustleigh. A Victorian 6 bedroom house overlooking the Wrey valley, on the edge of this favoured Dartmoor village. Standing in almost 8 acres and meticulously restored by the owners adding a four car garage and further buildings.

Jackson Stops (01392 214222) also have a property with garaging for four cars. Surprising, as it comes with a Grade 1 Listed Medieval Hall House, with 13th century chapel, Lordship of the Manor, swimming pool and lake (good for recreational and wild swimming!). Situated on the south western approach to Dartmoor near Cornwood, Fardel Manor would embrace the most elegant of period, classic cars.

Maybe all that is a bit much and a challenge of a different sort appeals. Stags (01392 255202) are the agents for Racier at Down St. Mary, in mid Devon. A three bedroom bungalow built in the 1980s by the current owners on a 2 acre site included with their commercial building housing an engineering business. The steel frame 4,000 sq.ft building could now become a classic car enthusiasts dream, subject to gaining appropriate planning consents - the potential is infinite.

Still not enough challenge? Savills (01392 455733) are agents for part of the former Dunkeswell airfield site with buildings and planning for the erection of a contemporary house.  Not far from the market town of Honiton this has to be a unique opportunity to have a  21st century home with limitless scope for housing as many classic cars and “boys toys” you can find!

So, has the car taken over -maybe. Soon they will be driverless or in Harry Potter style we can magic our way with a “port key” to anywhere in the virtual world.  Remember, at the end of the day - “it’s all about coming home”.
