Self Sufficiency – Diversification or Necessity?
I swore I would never write about Brexit or politics. And I won’t now other than by reference to the implications of what appears to be a current concern of trade deals regarding food. With another watershed moment in the Brexit saga on the horizon maybe we should consider some independence in the food chain. What if the foods we take for granted that in years gone by were luxuries once again became high day treats? Bring into the equation climate change and the UK has proved we can grow foods previous generations never considered - add some glass or a poly tunnel and the world is your oyster (or should that be banana?!).
The climate in Devon is the best in the country and quite in tune with growing most foods. The balmy, south facing slopes are ideal for growing fruit and vegetables - orchards and vineyards - cider and wine. Probably the largest organic vegetable box grower is based in the South Hams. But on a small scale raised vegetable beds worked on a rotational basis can be a self- sufficient source of fresh food for a family so acres aren’t needed.
Yellands Farm, Chagford for sale through Strutt and Parker (01392 215361) is a classic Dartmoor farmhouse with range of stone buildings retaining all the character of a bygone age- improved for modern living. Sitting in 25 acres with apple and pear orchard, productive vegetable garden and south facing paddocks it is ideal for a self-sufficiency lifestyle.
Winnowers, East Allington between Totnes and Kingsbridge -a delightful rural area off the beaten track but near to some of Devon’s best beaches - is a stone barn with possibly 17th century origins and now a comfortable four bedroom home. With a large open plan kitchen/living/reception area it is great for country living. In addition to the 0.67acre garden there is an option to buy more land. Within the garden is the making of a self -sufficiency holding with excellent vegetable garden and chicken run. Jackson Stops are the agents (01392 214222)
What better place for the enthusiastic gardener than the former head gardeners house to Haldon Mansion at Dunchideock. Haldon Gardens sits in six acres including a walled garden with swimming pool, parkland gardens and paddocks. In the past the gardens would have been the productive hub of the estate. Whilst vegetables in such quantities are not required a small section could be reinstated to feed the family. The four bedroom house has wonderful views in the lee of Haldon Hill and across to Haldon Belvedere perched high on the hill. Drew Pearce (01392 201748) are the agents.
So, with initiative and enthusiasm life may not have all the luxuries we have come to expect on the supermarket shelves but the alternative could just be better for the health! How satisfying to harvest the food we grow whether from a window box or an acre walled garden -it makes home what it is - “it’s all about coming home”.
