The Jurassic Coast
Stretching 95 miles along the East Devon and Dorset coast is the Jurassic Coastline, a playground for geologists and fossil hunters finding samples dating back 250 million years!. From Orcombe Point in Exmouth to Old Harry Rock in Swanage The Jurassic Coast was designated England’s first natural World Heritage site in 2001. The South West Coastal Path travels its entire length, passing through some of England’s prettiest seaside towns and villages. East Devon enjoys a very mild climate making the combination of a beautiful, protected landscape still very accessible by road, rail and air with beaches and stunning views one of the most sought after places to live.
All the towns have their own identity and fiercely protect it -The genteel sea front hotels and villas in Sidmouth, sitting between the Triassic red cliffs, hide the bustle of the town and strength of the community behind, whilst the lanes leading down to Branscombe ensure the tranquillity of a village, (reputedly with the longest village street in England) where the fields roll down to the beach and sea where little has changed for centuries. Lyme Regis (in Dorset rather than Devon I know), has steep streets running down to a working harbour as in Seaton where fishing is still an industry. The lush farmland running the length of the coastline, with manicured fields epitomises England’s green and pleasant land!
Permanent residents far outweigh the number of second homes in all the towns maintaining a balance and vibrancy in the local economy and communities. Inevitably when looking for property the attraction of a sea view is a draw. This will add to the cost and is generally worth it -there is something special about waking up to an ever changing, living water view. Bradleys in Budleigh Salterton (01395 442201) are selling Flat 4, Palm Court -a four bedroom flat commanding a stunning view across the bay -perfect retirement or second home. In Sidmouth for those looking for a real Grand Designs individual home, Humberts (01404 42456) are selling Woolbrook Reservoir. With over 5,000 sq feet, a converted reservoir with the accommodation focussed within a central atrium – certainly gets the “wow” factor! The same agents are selling a totally contrasting property - the quintessential chocolate box cottage, Old Thatch, in Branscombe. A listed village cottage with views down the valley, roses round the door and open fires. Also in Branscombe for those seeking a week end retreat John D Wood (01297 645004) are offering the chance to buy a timber chalet right on the beach- you can catch a fish for supper from the terrace!
Buying the right house is important but if there is to be a compromise make sure it isn’t the location -you can change a house but you can’t change the view and anyone buying along the East Devon coast will have that magical “feel good factor” waking up every morning - It’s all about coming home”.
