Mid Devon
Mid Devon: a tranche of glorious unspoilt countryside where communities flourish around villages and towns that have retained their character with few second homes altering the dynamics. The red soil typifies the agricultural element historically associated with Devon.
Entering the county via the M5 the region stretches east to the Blackdown Hills whilst to the west it touches the southern tip of Exmoor and the northern tip of Dartmoor – so three areas of outstanding beauty and two National Parks. Whilst it can’t boast a coastline it is well placed to reach them – the sailing waters of South Devon and the surfing mecca of the North, not forgetting the UNESCO Jurassic Coast in East Devon. There may not be a direct waterfront but there are many places it is a distant view - from within Exeter city to the surrounding hills.
The administrative centre is Tiverton whilst Crediton will claim a strong ecclesiastical connection being within the diocese of Exeter but with the unusual status of a Bishop. Both towns have strong farmers markets drawing from the predominantly agricultural economy.
The region has excellent road access via the M5, the A361 and A30 to all parts of the county and national network enabling commuters to live in the stunning rural surroundings – and for those working from home reliant on the internet Super Fast Fibre is gradually being rolled out with other airwave systems providing back up where it is yet to reach.
The government’s dictate to build houses has seen towns and villages growing ensuring future prosperity. The background infrastructure can take a while to catch up but the bigger picture will ensure Devon is a county many will aspire to call home.
Many a country lane will not have changed in a century and will lead past traditional farmsteads, cottages and old Rectories - always a favoured purchase. Sustainable solutions to heating are reducing the carbon emissions of such houses and making the running costs more affordable – and definitely more eco-friendly. The advent of home delivery has ensured rural living is feasible as anything and everything can be delivered to your door. The downside to this is the effect of the independent rural businesses that are outpriced forcing the closure of village shops and pubs - so often the focal point of a community. All part of the evolving world in which we find ourselves where the internet dictates. My hope is with more people living in rural situations it will encourage community funded shops and pubs ensuring the social fabric of country life is sustainable.
A house is a home: a home is a place to build memories: whether town, village or country Mid Devon has: “It’s all about coming home.”
