Surrey

The County

As many a property buyer and Recoco buying agent know, the green and exceptionally pleasant south east county of Surrey is one of Britain’s wealthiest areas. Home to about 1.2 million people in total, as independent buying agents can confirm, the area is bordered by Berkshire, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, and Greater London.

If you’re a property buyer who enjoys access to independent shopping opportunities, buyers agents might suggest a property search of attractive county town Guildford. Or ask the real estate buyers agent about Woking, the next largest town; your property search company can confirm the population is under 80,000.

Transport

As buyers agents can tell you, Surrey has always been at the heart of communication systems: first the stagecoach system and turnpike roads, and then the railways; with the coming of the train network, the discerning property buyer could easily travel to work daily in London.

Our Recoco property finder will confirm other routes include the A3 London to Portsmouth, A24 to Worthing and Littlehampton, and the A31. Our real estate buyers agent will confirm that rail links are also well-developed. Need to be near a busy railway station with London links? Your Recoco buying agent is likely to recommend Guildford, followed by Woking, Epsom, Redhill, and Staines. Independent buying agents can confirm other parts of England are also easy to reach.

If air travel is important to your property search, ask your boutique buying agents about the private airfield at Fairoaks Airport, at the edge of Chobham and Ottershaw. Redhill Aerodrome is also located in Surrey. Ask your property buying agent about the excellent transport links to Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, and Stansted airports and the Channel Tunnel via the M25, M3, and M23 motorways.

History

Surrey’s fate has been entwined with that of London for centuries - ask your property search company. The county has been settled since at least Roman times and sites of possible temples and Roman roads have been identified, ask your real estate buyers agent for details. The Saxons and the Normans also settled here. Independent buying agents can confirm that Surrey is also home to Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was sealed in the 13th century.

Your property buying agent can also present new towns like Redhill and Woking, which developed alongside the railways - older towns like Croydon, Farnham, and Guildford also grew dramatically. Or ask your property search company about the other local industries: bicycle and car manufacturers, aviation, and aircraft manufacturing.

Celebrity Connections

The county has been home to numerous writers through the centuries, as our Recoco property finder can tell you: John Donne, Daniel Defoe, Alfred Tennyson, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Lewis Carroll. Mathematician Ada Lovelace, garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, and movie royalty Peggy Ashcroft and David Lean also lived here. Artist Tracey Emin was born in Croydon, and actor Tom Holland is from Kingston upon Thames.

Education

Surrey offers numerous educational options as your property buying agent can attest: state secondary schools, academies, sixth form colleges, and state primaries. Over half of state secondary schools have their own sixth forms and many offer technical specialisms. Buyers agents can also help you compare over 40 independent schools, including Charterhouse, mentioned in the 1868 Public Schools Act, and Guildford’s Royal Grammar School.

The University of Surrey can be found in Guildford, and campuses of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in Epsom and Farnham.

Leisure and Events

Our boutique buying agents can confirm that Surrey has more woodlands than any county in England. Its pleasant climate and green landscapes make it ideal for gentle exploration – ask your Recoco property finder about Box Hill, the Devil’s Punch Bowl, and Frensham Common. Surrey Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Winkworth Arboretum and Windlesham Arboretum both offer the chance to watch the seasons change dramatically, and there are numerous Wildlife Trust reserves. Or take a little time out from your property search to enjoy a family day out at a theme park like Chessington World of Adventures or Thorpe Park.

Cricket remains extremely popular in Surrey, and boutique buying agents can tell you about other sports including motorsport racing, golf, and football to enjoy. Or ask your Recoco buying agent about other sports, including ice hockey, basketball, netball, volleyball, and rowing. Horse racing, horse riding, and golf are also popular pastimes: golf courses include Wentworth, which hosts numerous international competitions.

Fun Fact

The first known reference in history to cricket was found in details of a 16th century game played at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford.
