Putney

Nowadays associated with the sport of rowing – the world-famous Cambridge v Oxford Boat Race has taken place annually since 1856 from Putney to Mortlake – Putney is more than just a mecca for watersports, delightful though it is to work, rest and play in this wonderful part of the on the river at the south western edge of the capital.

Traversing the streets and byways in and around the beautiful and iconic Putney Bridge which traverses the River Thames, one almost experiences a village-like feel within one of the world’s major cities.

It is no wonder Putney is popular with both those who spend their time living and working within its boundaries and those who travel into the City for work and enjoy coming home in the evening to its relaxed feel.

Putney Bridge is the only bridge in Britain to be flanked by churches on both ends. On the north bank is All Saints' church, whose churchyard was partly dug up when the bridge was widened in 1926 and required 15 graves to be removed and re-sited. On the south bank is St Mary's church, the site of the famous Putney Debates on the English constitution.
