Polperro

The Town

If you’re a property buyer looking to purchase traditional property in Cornwall, Recoco property finders will be delighted to introduce the charming fishing village of Polperro. On the river Pol, it’s 25 miles west of Plymouth, 7 miles to the east of Fowey, and around 4 miles from Looe, with a mild, pleasant climate.

The narrow streets are packed with pretty cottages – property agents can help property buyers locate their perfect match. In summer, property searchers will often find the cottages covered in flowers.

Ask the Recoco buying agent about the Cornish word for Polperro, Porthypyra. (It means Pyra’s Cove.) The population is around 1,600.

Transport

Real estate buyers agents will confirm your own transport is essential to make the most of Polperro. Ask about the traffic situation too. Vehicles are banned on the narrow streets in summer. The property search company can clarify the location of the main public car park.

Ask property buying agents for up-to-date bus timetable sources: buses typically run between Plymouth, Looe and Polperro. Recoco property finders can confirm that the nearest main road is the A390.

History

If you’d like to know a little more about the history of Polperro, our property search company has local knowledge. The settlement has been a recognised fishing village since the 13th century. Ask the Recoco property agent about the 14th century Crumplehorn Inn and Mill, opposite the main car park at the entrance to the village. There’s an impressively restored water wheel here consisting of 12 tons of revolving iron and timber.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, it was renowned as a haven for smugglers. Ask our Recoco buying agents about the visits of Methodist preacher John Wesley (he observed in 1762 that all the locals appeared involved in smuggling). There’s even a Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing, in the Warren, by the harbour.

Education

For property searchers with primary aged dependents, Polperro Primary Academy is a well-regarded primary school with under 150 pupils. Property buyers with older children might be interested that the nearest secondary state schools are in Looe or Truro. Real estate buyers agents can identify the nearest suitable prep and private schools for your needs. These include Polwhele House, with several others in nearby Devon including Bramdean School, King’s School near Plymouth, St Peter’s Prep School in Lympstone, and Mount Kelly in Tavistock.

Leisure and Events

As our property search company can confirm, Polperro is a tourist haven. Property buying agents can recommend shops selling art, jewellery and souvenirs. The town hosts several festivals throughout the year, many of which take place in the village square, the Big Green. The well-known Polperro Fishermen’s Choir also regularly gives al fresco concerts on the quayside during high season.

There is an Arts Festival, Water Carnival, Morris dancing, and, in good Cornish tradition, the Furry Dance. (No, we’re not making this up. Ask your Recoco property finder if you don’t believe us on this one.)

Need to know about moorings for yachts and pleasure boats? Ask your real estate buyers agent – the sheltered bay offers ideal moorings. Polperro has a small beach; larger beaches are just a few miles away.

Those who enjoy walking can ask our real estate buyers about the 630 mile long South West Coast Path, which runs through Polperro. For a different perspective, your property buying agent can tell you about the boat trips from the harbour where passengers often see seals and dolphins up close.

Celebrity Connections

Recoco buying agents can confirm that several well-known celebrities have links to the town. This includes novelists Hugh Walpole and Angela Brazil, and, more recently, husband and wife team and TV personalities Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.

Foodies’ Corner

Cornwall is well-known for its fresh produce and delightful bistros, gastropubs, and hidden gems of restaurants: Polperro is no exception. When it comes to seafood in particular, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Give Michelle’s Restaurant a try, or enjoy more than one “catch of the day” at the Blue Peter Inn. If you’d rather sample a fabulous Cornish cream tea, the Bean Inn offers a warm welcome. Your property buying agents will willingly offer other suggestions.

Fun Fact

Enjoy a good yarn? Ask your Recoco buyers agent Robert Jeffery, press-ganged into the Navy in 1807. Abandoned on a deserted island as a punishment for stealing beer from the captain, he became a real life Robinson Crusoe. An American ship rescued him, and he made it back to Polperro, where he later married.
