Winter Comfort
2020 – year of two halves in the property world. I cannot avoid mentioning Covid-19 - it has been the single most influential effect in a lifetime and the ongoing economic and social implications are yet to be fully realised. I hardly dare add the Brexit subject to the conversation as it is rearing its head again and will undoubtably impact on our lives -so two major influences changing our outlook over which we have no control.
There was optimistic enthusiasm at the beginning of 2020 in the property world -a Brexit deal had been struck (or had it?) and confidence was growing after all the uncertain effect of three years what will happen when we leave the EU. Then a looming nightmare that we tried to ignore until the third week in March when the door was firmly closed -literally! A disaster far greater than any political negotiation could work its way through -a pandemic that took over the world and, in my opinion, changed the social and economic outlook for ever.
So, a new beginning. Cities will see empty offices as technology allows multi office conferences to take place without anyone travelling beyond their living room. The single biggest impact on the property market is the realisation you can live almost anywhere, seeing the country market take off at unprecedented levels fuelling bidding wars and price growth unimaginable just a year ago. Is it sustainable -we’ll see!
For those of us living in this wonderful county we have escaped the real effect of lockdowns – and whilst the summer season brought perhaps just a few too many tourists it was good to see the place alive and our shattered tourist industry reaping some rewards- albeit under extreme circumstances.
Now the nights have drawn in we’ll be glad to have a self-imposed lock down -cosy nights watching Netflix by the fire – maybe?!
