Water, Water Everywhere!

Summer’s here! And no, I am not forecasting a long, wet summer!  It’s time to get outdoors and head for the water. No other natural element has the natural draw of water. Maybe as an island race we are instinctively drawn to it. More likely it gives a feeling of escapism- freedom from the routine of daily life. Floating on the water, whether in dinghy, sailboard or yacht or just watching the waves has a soothing effect- so it’s time to turn off all mobiles and embrace the amazing coastline and rivers in and around Devon.

Coastal property is always in demand and commands a premium -some places more than others. Despite threats of global warming and increased flooding we are not deterred! Modern architecture embraces the elements and technology minimises previously arduous tasks -mobile phones can control most things -if you have the right Apps (and know how to use them!)

The hotspots of Devon waterside property are mostly, but not entirely, along the south coast where sailing and  water sports dominate. The north coast is a surfer’s paradise, a haven for family beach holidays. The more mature enjoy the South West Coast Path, making it a mission to complete whilst sampling the many pubs and cafes along the way!

Are Devon waterside towns second home havens for the rich? -some attract more than others – strong communities thrive under the surface and continually evolve through the generations.  No one town is perfect -beauty is in the eye of the beholder and people’s needs and expectations vary and evolve through a lifetime. Shakespeare referred to “the seven ages of man” – I believe our lives have ten year phases and life is far more transient than in the late 16th century! We look for new places and changes – we can - Shakespeare didn’t have a fast car to get around! Devon has an eclectic mix of coastal towns -there is one for everyone.

Carrswood in Salcombe is on offer through Strutt and Parker (01392 215631). Commanding a view across to Mill Bay and out to sea, a period gem in a stunning spot. Sitting high above Shaldon, Park Green have built seven new homes embracing convenience and modern technology, Savills (01392 455700). Taylor Underwood (01271 320330 ) are selling Ferndown overlooking Saunton Sands golf course and Saunton Sands and also High Legh, a wonderful Grand Designs opportunity on the edge of Croyde - two chalets with amazing potential. In the east Devon town of Beer, Fortnam, Smith and Banwell (01297 23939) are selling Wendine, a 1950s bungalow with views across the town, countryside and sea -an opportunity with potential!

Communication and technology allow many fortunate people to enjoy Devon’s stunning waterfronts and all they offer, whilst staying in direct contact with business connections across the world -the best of all worlds - It’s all about coming home”.
