The Summer of Two Stories

What a wonderful summer! Lots of sunshine that can now be enjoyed by most. Its been a steep learning curve, a test of resolve and reflection. The frustration of so many, the anxiety over jobs, businesses and health has overtaken (understandably) the daily appreciation of the surroundings of life in Devon that can so easily be taken for granted. It is difficult to imagine the tensions created in cities when the rolling hills and waterside scenes of Devon are the epitome of tranquility.

Who can blame those who can realise a dream of work /life balance not tied to a desk and tube journey is achievable. For many it is just a dream. Work, schooling, affordability preclude a change and it is isn’t for everyone. I have heard many say they have suffered withdrawal symptoms -cabin fever -suffering from the lack of a busy café style social life.

Devon offers the café culture lifestyle -you just need to work harder at it. The balance is the fresh air, the unique variety a county with two very different coastlines and two National Parks offers and the amazing contrast of property that has evolved through the centuries. Few counties have such a contrast within a few miles.   And we have a good share of contemporary, sustainable homes for those seeking 21st century   living -all run from a smart phone!

So where to live: that depends on what is important on a daily basis. Everything from that morning latte to schools/ golf course/library -everyone has a routine and priorities. So, find the location that gives you the amenities that are important on a daily basis. It’s a very personal feeling where its truly individual to each person.

Fortunately Devon caters for most tastes and, if embraced, can be a magical place to live. Beautiful thatched longhouses oozing history, gracious Georgian farmhouses, elegant townhouses, waterfront  and contemporary homes jostling for attention in all areas -so country, town and waterside. What a choice!

Lower Drewston Barn, midway between Chagford and Moretonhampstead in the Dartmoor National Park. Two impressive granite stone barns oozing character standing in 3.5 acres. Perfect for multi- generational living or income generation.  Knight Frank (01392 423111).

Mount Pleasant. Noss Mayo. A modern five bedroom family home in an elevated setting looking across the estuary to the twin village of Newton Ferrers.  Sitting high on the hillside the house offers space and privacy yet within this favoured village. Luscombe Maye (01752 872417).

The Round House, Instow - in the far north of the county yet accessible via the North Devon Link road to the M5 and Tiverton Parkway .  Sitting beside the beach with estuary and sea views a family home with an  interesting history. Once the village yacht club but now a fully restored and redesigned five bedroom house. A wonderful waterside home or perfect second home.   Stags (01271 425030).

Few counties offer such a variation of property and locations from city centre to remote moorland farmsteads and high end waterfront homes.  Home: it’s what you want it to be - It’s all about coming home.
