The Green Path

Climate change: Sustainability, eco credentials, emissions. The Cop26 summit held in Glasgow in November saw world leaders agree to methods of reducing the worlds carbon footprint. Is it enough and in time?

Whilst not wishing to engage in any political discussion the effects of climate change are real and need addressing to assure our children and all future generations of a sustainable world environment in which to live. Action, not words, a is needed now!

The Government has laid down clear rules regarding new housebuilding and is providing funding for older houses to increase insulation and change heating systems to air and ground source heat pumps replacing gas and oil boilers.  A small step in a world problem but nevertheless a start.

Most people are mindful of the sensitivity of the world’s environment and will address changes where budgets allow. As with many things a whole new world away from 20th century attitudes of “live for today and don’t worry about tomorrow” but it will all take time - a precious commodity that runs faster than any changes can be implemented.

In Devon I have seen a growing number of eco-friendly constructed houses, and older houses adapted to meet current criteria.  There is a greater understanding of how heat pumps work and I am seeing them as a specific requirement in clients’ agendas.

There are number of companies building sustainable housing, often European such as Baufritz and Huf Haus to name just two. Both have seen increases in demand recently. Builders of traditional housing also embrace the consumer need and accept Government dictates despite potentially adding to costs, inevitably passing them on to the end user.

A 3,200 sq.ft  5/6 bedroom eco home under construction with underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump, backed by solar panels and high grade insulation with Hybrid Eco Glazing. Rainwater harvesting and a Tesla power wall complete the efficiency of this stunning new home. Stags 01271 322833.

Wood House, Bishopsteignton. Great estuary and country views.  Another stunning 5 bedroom eco house designed by award winning architect Dunfermline - renowned for their sustainable designs and built two years ago. The heat recovery system and rainwater harvesting and backed by the Smart CCTV system, electric car charging wall and a Stannah glass side passenger lift. Strutt and Parker 01392 215631

Whilst recognising the vital importance of preserving the planet for future generations it is also important to enjoy the homes we have and not add to the landfill problem by throwing away functional heating sources – change takes time and all factors should be considered as progress evolves:    – “It’s all about coming home.”
