Living by the Water - North Devon

Last month I looked at living by the water in South Devon. How different the North Devon coastline. Dramatic, rugged cliffs dropping down to the Bristol Channel where Exmoor clings to the edges -cricket in the Valley of The Rocks, playing or watching, has to be experienced. Follow the coastline around the north west point and the scene changes as miles of sandy beach at Woolacombe and Putsborough look out across the Atlantic -surfers paradise! As Devon joins Cornwall the Hartland point turns again to remote rocky outcrops -the whole connected by The South West Coast Path.

Devon has the variations no other county offers -a country of its own!  Yet nowhere is far from anywhere, with great transport links opening the county to those seeking a lifestyle to suit their dreams and pockets -not forgetting the internet connecting us to the world! The buzz of Exeter, full of restaurants to the remote villages you mostly find in North Devon -somewhere for everyone.

Waterside living has an attraction that creates “hotspots” in property terms. Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe have all become favoured places to buy pushing prices beyond many pockets. Sea views can still be found, maybe not “on the beach” but across the sweeping countryside.

Clifton Court presides over Putsborough beach, formerly a hotel and converted to luxury flats, is now a favoured second home purchase, but what better than permanent living waking to the sound of crashing waves and walks along the three miles of sands. No 24 is for sale through Jackson Stops (01271 325153). Nearby enjoying the coastal village feel is Speedwell Cottage, Georgeham.  Offered by Stags (01271 322833). A classic listed, Devon thatched cottage with a wealth of character, open fireplaces, beams and gardens. Combining the community spirit of the village with the benefits of coastal living.

Moving round the Taw Estuary towards the Cornwall border is Highford Cottage, Higher Clovelly. A lifestyle property with income. A stone farmhouse with  detached barn with proven holiday rental income enjoying rural and distant sea views. A lifestyle purchase. Webbers are the selling agents (01237 472344)

And for those with deep pockets looking for total privacy and security, Glenthorne at Countisbury, a Grade 11 listed country house described as transitional and eclectic located in a truly unique and spectacular location with views across the coastline. Included in the sale of this seven bedroom mansion is the home farm, converted to house a literary museum with secondary accommodation in addition to the gardeners cottage All sitting in 77 acres of gardens, paddocks, ancient woodland and private foreshore. Magical! Carter Jonas are the selling agents (01823 428590).

So, however deep or shallow your pockets, North Devon can offer stunning waterside living for all ages. As generations become more transitional, integrating millennial’s demands with traditional styles, the future of the local economy is guaranteed for future generations.  Security begins at home - “it’s all about coming home”.
