Let the Train Take the Strain!
Looking at estate agents’ sales brochures they always quote distances to nearby towns. With larger properties this includes reference to the nearest train station and the time to London. With the ever increasing ability to work remotely counties such as Devon have benefitted enormously - it is perfectly possible to arrive in London for a 9.00 a.m. meeting (or maybe just a day shopping) so long as you are an early bird.
A negative for country living today are the increasing emissions controls for cars and the increased traffic over the years. We are encouraged to use public transport so it is hoped the train links will improve throughout the region enabling many properties to once again have access to the train system. This will inevitably affect the value of rural property in a positive way.
Accessibility to daily requirements, whether it be schools, work or the golf course is always a main consideration when buying a home. Add to this the ability to catch a train to other parts of the country it is little wonder the splendour of Devon attracts people that previously only considered it a holiday destination.
There are two main lines to London, arriving in Paddington and Waterloo as well as equally high-speed trains heading north via Bristol and Birmingham. Arriving from Cornwall via Plymouth there are ample stations along the way opening South Devon whilst the link from Barnstaple connects North Devon.
Towns that have particularly gained from this service are Totnes, Topsham, Honiton and Tiverton, to name a few. Topsham in particular has a train station via the Exmouth link connecting direct to Exeter St. David’s and Paddington in 2.5 hours. Combine this with the attraction of the waterfront, the unique array of independent shops and restaurants in the High Street it is little wonder this is one of the most sought after towns in Devon.
