Homegrown

Last month I talked about eco sustainability in houses. Continuing the theme it is not just the buildings themselves that play a critical part in the carbon footprint we create but the way we live our daily lives.

Retailers are addressing the problem by minimising the use of plastic. For those fortunate enough to have gardens and realising the effect of using home for work and play then growing our own vegetables will help in some small way to the unnecessary need for packaging anything at all. There is a sense of wellbeing in cooking and eating what you have nurtured. Maybe the self-sufficiency ideal of the 60s and 70s is no longer appealing to all but the determined but even a small garden with raised beds can produce a healthy fresh rota of vegetables and herbs.

As ever Devon comes up trumps as the mild climate of the county is perfect for green fingered enthusiasts (other than those possibly living high on Dartmoor). You only have to travel through the countryside to see the lush meadows to appreciate the quality of the soil.

A commitment is needed to enjoy regular produce from any garden but the rewards are enormous both from enjoying the fruits of one’s labours and the serenity of the simplicity of nature as an escape to the fast world we inhabit.

Haytown, Sampford Spiney on the southern western edge of Dartmoor a secluded former farmhouse that has been renovated to become a spacious family home. Enjoying total seclusion and with potential to further increase the accommodation. Sitting in an acre of garden with established vegetable garden in place this is the perfect home for the country loving family. Mansbridge and Balment are the agents (01822 855055).

East Grange, West Hill is the major portion of the former village rectory. A classic Victorian property built in 1850 with elegant rooms enjoying a secluded setting overlooking its 1.4 acre gardens, beautifully maintained and include an outdoor swimming pool.  Impressive entrance and reception rooms, four bedrooms and the former chapel make this a unique property in a favoured East Devon village.   Humberts are the agents (01404 42456).

Living a rural lifestyle, enjoying walks in the many and varied terrains of Devon - Dartmoor, The South West Coast Path, The Tarka Trail, The Two Moors Way are just a few that give options to explore depending on the fitness and enthusiasm! Then home to a homecooked meal with homegrown vegetables! Therapeutic in all senses for body and mind.

Travel may well be on your agenda but the world has changed and the pleasures reaped from home are once again appreciated - so enjoy home– “It’s all about coming home.”
