City Life

Devon and Cornwall have hit the headlines in the press as being the most sought- after places to move from the great cities and towns in the country. Cornwall will no doubt claim a bigger share of the attraction but that could only open another long standing inter-county debate - cream first or second!!

Every mention of moving from London makes reference to country living and cites Devon as a tranquil rural county conjuring an image of nothing but countryside. How wrong they are! The Cathedral city of Exeter and the naval city of Plymouth are vibrant cities in which to live, attracting international companies to settle and offering a wealth of culture, education, hospitality and leisure facilities to challenge the Capital and any other city. Add to that the unique scenario of coastlines, National Parks and rolling countryside being within a quick driving, cycling or even walking distance. So, our provincial city lives have the best of all worlds -a city environment in the midst of some of England’s most beautiful countryside.

Both Exeter and Plymouth suffered serious damage in World War 11 and have risen through the latter part of the 20th century to become the modern cities we see, yet embracing a historic past blending the surviving buildings with innovative new development. Only the past gives opportunity for new life.

In both cities the waterfront has become sought after -The Quay in Exeter and Royal William Yard in Plymouth amongst others.

The South West property market is seeing a massive upturn in transactions and values with many properties selling before they hit the open market or portals. Examples of what could be bought include:

St. Leonards: Exeter’s prime residential area. A listed period house with views to the Cathedral enjoying good off-road parking and private west facing garden.  Gracious reception rooms and five double bedrooms make this an excellent family home within walking distance to the local “village” shops, City centre and Exeter school.  Strutt and Parker (01392 215631) found a buyer on the private market.

Still in the favoured St. Leonards area of Exeter Knight Frank (01392 423111) are agents for the former St. Margaret’s School properties now converted to exemplary apartments -the ideal down-sizing opportunity for local residents to remain in the locality. Renovated to meet the exacting demands of modern technology these apartments will appeal to all generations, benefitting from private parking and excellent communal gardens.

Moving to Plymouth for those wishing a more nautical flavour but still city life the penthouses in Leeward House are part of the Mount Wise development. On the fifth floor with stunning views across Plymouth Sound and the River Tamar yet enjoying a parkland setting including private cricket pitch what more could an Englishman ask for! Attwell Martin are the local agents (01752 676633)

And the answer to cream first or second is no contest – Devon is of course correct!  For our Plymouth residents it is just a short trip over the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall to savour their cream tea in a different way - if they really must!  Whichever side of the river you live the South West is a wonderful place to call home - It’s all about coming home.
