Brave New World

2021: We made it! Let’s hope the New Year brings renewed confidence in our lives revitalising the confidence 2020 will be forever associated with knocking.

So Covid-19 and Brexit will still be on the agenda -one “the hidden enemy” determined to tear apart society as we know it, the other a political drama played out before us -both with dramatic effects on our lives that we seem powerless to influence.

Having got that out of the way let’s look at the optimism for 2021 here in Devon. It remains stunningly beautiful whether on Dartmoor, the rugged North Coast abutting Exmoor, the North Devon surfing beaches, the sailing waters out of Salcombe and Dartmouth, all interspersed by miles of rolling undulating countryside.

The property market saw unprecedented levels of activity in the summer of 2020 and is an ongoing, apparently sustainable trend.   Who can possibly blame anyone for wanting to share what we enjoy?  – I hope they adapt to a lifestyle that finds time to embrace their new surroundings and don’t expect it to compete with the frenetic lifestyle they leave behind.

The contrast of properties across the county caters for all tastes and budgets – City, country and waterside so whether the move is within the county, a total life style change from beyond the county or as a second home, there is a good choice
Starting in the very southerly tip of Devon -3 Hamstone Court, Salcombe -offered by Luscombe Maye (01548 845090) – a fabulous  four bedroom apartment with 180 degree views across the Salcombe estuary  from two balconies - the perfect spot to watch all the water activity. An elevated position within a gated development giving total security -with parking and a garage - invaluable in a central position in the town.

In the north west tip of the county -Woolacombe – another favoured waterfront town. Coombesgate House -a tastefully modernised Edwardian five bedroom house with one bedroom self -contained flat. Another elevated setting looking over Coombesgate Beach across Woolacombe Bay to Lundy Island in the distance. An ever- changing scene that you will never tire of. Stags (01271 322833).

Maybe for the busy professional/business family who needs access to the outside world - Straightway Head House in Whimple is perfect. A 6,000 sq ft six bedroom house standing in thirteen acres with stunning views across the Devon countryside to Dartmoor in the distance. Easy access to the A30 and M5 for that quick getaway to London and beyond and yet a quick run to the East Devon Jurassic Coastline. An ideal spot for access to the many leading schools of the county.  A house for all seasons and family demands. Strutt and Parker (01392215631)

So, let’s all look forward with optimism. Embrace “the new normal”and enjoy the amazing surroundings Devon provides in abundance - we will remember the 2020 strap line “stay home, stay safe, save lives” but look ahead to new beginnings in 2021  -they start at home :    It’s all about coming home.
